Growing Paddy (Rice) in Punjab
Updated 2026-07-13 · Region guide
Punjab sits in the Trans-Gangetic Plains with semi-arid, cold winters, hot summers and alluvial loam. India's wheat–paddy bowl with assured irrigation and strong government procurement. Here's how paddy (rice) — a Kharif (monsoon) crop — fits, and how to grow it well here.
Is Punjab good for growing paddy (rice)?
| Agro-climatic zone | Trans-Gangetic Plains |
| Climate | semi-arid, cold winters, hot summers |
| Soils | alluvial loam — Paddy (Rice) prefers clay/clay-loam that holds water |
| Rainfall / water | ~600 mm; largely canal + tubewell irrigated. Paddy (Rice) needs high (standing water) water |
| Season | Kharif (monsoon) |
When to sow paddy (rice) in Punjab
Sow in nursery May–Jun, transplant Jun–Jul and harvest around Oct. The crop takes about 120–160 days. In Punjab's semi-arid, cold winters, hot summers, the window matters more than anything else you do: ~600 mm rainfall and largely canal + tubewell irrigated mean a late Kharif (monsoon) sowing runs paddy (rice) into the wrong weather at its most sensitive stage.
Where paddy (rice) actually grows in Punjab
Common paddy sits in Sangrur, Patiala, Ludhiana, Barnala, Moga, Ferozepur, Muktsar, Bathinda and Faridkot. Basmati is a separate map - Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Fazilka and Ferozepur, the Majha and border belt. Every acre of it is transplanted on tubewell and canal water, and in central Punjab the water table is dropping roughly a metre a year. That is not background context; it is the fact that now governs what you are allowed to plant and when.
Where it is sold: Khanna, Jagraon, Moga, Rajpura, Sunam and Barnala handle common paddy, procured at MSP by Pungrain, Markfed, Punsup and FCI through your arhtiya with DBT payment - effectively total procurement. Basmati is the opposite in every way: no MSP at all, sold to private exporters and millers at Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Fazilka, at a price set by export demand in Iran and the Gulf and by whether the consignment clears residue testing. Your common paddy has a floor; your basmati's price is decided outside India.
The local risk to plan for: The groundwater collapse has turned into law and policy. The Preservation of Subsoil Water Act bars transplanting before a notified date, Pusa-44 has been banned outright for being a long-duration water guzzler that also arrives over the 17% moisture limit with high brokens, and stubble burning is now penalised. Separately, basmati carries a market risk no agronomy fixes: the Punjab Agriculture Department notifies a list of insecticides banned on basmati each season after residue rejections, and one banned residue can get the whole lot refused by the exporter.
Best paddy (rice) varieties for Punjab
Grown in Punjab:
- PR-126 (short duration, the main water-saving choice)
- PR-131
- PR-121
- Pusa Basmati 1509 (short-duration basmati)
- Pusa Basmati 1121 (the export workhorse)
- note: Pusa-44 is banned in Punjab - do not plant it
Confirm the variety is notified for Punjab — on alluvial loam under largely canal + tubewell irrigated, a variety bred for a different zone will underperform whatever the seed packet claims. Your Punjab KVK or agriculture officer holds the current shortlist.
Typical yield & price
Typical yield here is around 28–32 quintal/acre. The government MSP is ₹2,183/quintal; local mandi rates vary, so check YieldAI for today's live Punjab price.
Common problems in Punjab
The pests and diseases to scout for:
- white-backed planthopper and brown planthopper
- southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus (the 2022 dwarfing outbreak), carried by white-backed planthopper
- stem borer
- bacterial leaf blight, worse in long-duration crops
- false smut in a wet September
semi-arid conditions shape which of these bite hardest each season — scout early and act while a problem is small. YieldAI can identify a pest or disease from a photo of your crop.
Key practices
- Do not transplant before the notified date - it is the law, and it also syncs the crop to the monsoon so you pump less
- Move to PR-126 or another short-duration PAU variety: it cuts weeks of pumping and leaves time to sow wheat before the heat window closes
- Try DSR on medium soils with the state incentive - but not on sandy land, where it disappoints
- Manage stubble with a Happy Seeder or surface seeder; burning is fined and it costs you the organic matter
- If you grow basmati, follow the Punjab Agriculture Department's notified banned-insecticide list for the season exactly and take alternatives from PAU or your block officer - a residue rejection costs the entire consignment, not a percentage of it
