What rhizome rot looks like

  • Above ground: the leaves yellow and droop, and the base of the pseudostem (the collar) turns soft, watery and brown so the shoot topples easily.
  • Below ground: the rhizomes turn soft and rotten with a foul smell, instead of firm and bright inside.
  • Pattern: it usually shows up in patches in the low, wet parts of the field first — a strong clue that water is the driver.

Why it happens — water and infected seed

Rhizome rot is caused by soil-borne fungi (commonly Pythium, sometimes Fusarium) that thrive in warm, waterlogged soil. Two things feed the problem:

  • Poor drainage — standing water after heavy monsoon rain is the classic trigger.
  • Infected seed rhizomes — the disease rides into a clean field on rotten planting material.

Many turmeric growers add beneficial bio-agents (such as Trichoderma or Pseudomonas, where available) with plenty of well-rotted organic matter at planting, as a seed treatment and soil enrichment.
