Growing Cotton in Telangana
Updated 2026-07-13 · Region guide
Telangana sits in the Southern Plateau (Deccan) with semi-arid, hot and red sandy soil, black soil. Deccan plateau — a leading paddy, cotton, chilli and maize state. Here's how cotton — a Kharif crop — fits, and how to grow it well here.
Is Telangana good for growing cotton?
| Agro-climatic zone | Southern Plateau (Deccan) |
| Climate | semi-arid, hot |
| Soils | red sandy soil, black soil — Cotton prefers deep black (regur) soil |
| Rainfall / water | ~900 mm; tanks, borewells + Godavari/Krishna lift schemes. Cotton needs moderate; hates waterlogging water |
| Season | Kharif |
When to sow cotton in Telangana
Sow in Jun–Jul and harvest around Oct–Jan. The crop takes about 160–200 days. In Telangana's semi-arid, hot, the window matters more than anything else you do: ~900 mm rainfall and tanks, borewells + Godavari/Krishna lift schemes mean a late Kharif sowing runs cotton into the wrong weather at its most sensitive stage.
Where cotton actually grows in Telangana
Adilabad is the biggest, with Nirmal, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Warangal, Mahabubabad, Khammam, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool and Mahabubnagar behind it. The soil split matters more than the district: black soil holds a crop through a dry spell, while chalka (red sandy) soil has almost no water-holding capacity, and most of this is rainfed with a borewell as the only backup.
Where it is sold: Enumamula (Warangal) is one of Asia's largest agricultural market yards; Jammikunta, Adilabad, Khammam and Bhainsa are the other big cotton yards. CCI operates heavily in Telangana - it is one of its largest procurement states - so the CCI-versus-ginner choice is live here in a way it is not in Gujarat: CCI pays MSP but only on FAQ within its moisture limit and on its own token timetable, while the ginner pays cash today at less. Separately, the Gadwal-Wanaparthy belt is India's cottonseed production hub, which is a different business entirely.
The local risk to plan for: Chalka soil is the difference between Telangana and Vidarbha. Red sandy soil holds almost no moisture, so a two or three week September break at boll-fill is more devastating here than on Maharashtra's black regur, which carries a crop through. That drives the borewell gamble - dig to save the crop, and the borewell fails. On top, cotton area swings year to year as assured Kaleshwaram water and the paddy bonus pull farmers into rice and back out again.
Best cotton varieties for Telangana
Grown in Telangana:
- approved Bt (Bollgard-II) hybrids notified for Telangana - effectively the whole area; always plant the refuge packet in the bag
- short-duration Bt hybrids on shallow chalka soil, where a long-duration hybrid cannot fill late bolls
- desi (arboreum) types on the shallowest rainfed chalka land - a lower ceiling, far more reliable when the monsoon breaks
- Suraj (CICR public hirsutum) where high-density planting is being tried
- hybrid seed-production parent lines under contract in the Gadwal-Wanaparthy belt - economically a different crop, since you are paid a contract rate for seed, not a mandi rate for kapas
Confirm the variety is notified for Telangana — on red sandy soil, black soil under tanks, borewells + Godavari/Krishna lift schemes, a variety bred for a different zone will underperform whatever the seed packet claims. Your Telangana KVK or agriculture officer holds the current shortlist.
Typical yield & price
Typical yield here is around 6–10 quintal/acre. The government MSP is ₹7,020/quintal (long staple); local mandi rates vary, so check YieldAI for today's live Telangana price.
Common problems in Telangana
The pests and diseases to scout for:
- pink bollworm - now entrenched, with Bt resistance real across the Deccan
- sucking pests in sequence: jassids and thrips first, then whitefly, hardest on the chalka soils
- tobacco caterpillar (Spodoptera) in the Warangal-Khammam belt
- boll rot after a wet spell at boll opening
- leaf reddening on moisture-stressed chalka late in the season
semi-arid conditions shape which of these bite hardest each season — scout early and act while a problem is small. YieldAI can identify a pest or disease from a photo of your crop.
Key practices
- On chalka soil, a long-duration hybrid is a gamble - it has to fill bolls in October on stored moisture the soil never held. A shorter-duration hybrid or desi is often the better bet
- Terminate and uproot stalks after the last pick; do not carry the crop into February for one more pick, because that is the pink bollworm carry-over
- Pheromone traps from squaring and check for rosetted flowers
- Find out whether the CCI centre at Enumamula or Jammikunta is open before you pick - CCI pays MSP but only on dry FAQ, and the ginner's instant cash is always below it
- If you are in the Gadwal-Wanaparthy seed belt, your economics are the contract rate and the labour bill, not the kapas price - budget it as a different crop
