Growing Paddy (Rice) in Kerala
Updated 2026-07-13 · Region guide
Kerala sits in the West Coast Plains & Hills with humid tropical, very high rainfall and laterite, coastal sandy, alluvium. Humid, high-rainfall coast — the land of coconut, spices and backwater rice (Kuttanad/Kole). Here's how paddy (rice) — a Kharif (monsoon) crop — fits, and how to grow it well here.
Is Kerala good for growing paddy (rice)?
| Agro-climatic zone | West Coast Plains & Hills |
| Climate | humid tropical, very high rainfall |
| Soils | laterite, coastal sandy, alluvium — Paddy (Rice) prefers clay/clay-loam that holds water |
| Rainfall / water | ~3000 mm; largely rainfed (high rain) + wells. Paddy (Rice) needs high (standing water) water |
| Season | Kharif (monsoon) |
When to sow paddy (rice) in Kerala
Sow in Virippu Apr–May; Mundakan Sep–Oct and harvest around varies by season. The crop takes about 120–160 days. In Kerala's humid tropical, very high rainfall, the window matters more than anything else you do: ~3000 mm rainfall and largely rainfed (high rain) + wells mean a late Kharif (monsoon) sowing runs paddy (rice) into the wrong weather at its most sensitive stage.
Where paddy (rice) actually grows in Kerala
Palakkad (the Chittur belt) is the biggest and the state's rice bowl. Then come the two below-sea-level systems that exist nowhere else in India: Kuttanad (Alappuzha and Kottayam), farmed inside bunded polders up to two metres below sea level and pumped dry before every crop, and the Kole lands of Thrissur and Ponnani. Add the saline coastal systems - Pokkali in Ernakulam and Alappuzha, Kaipad in Kannur - and the Wayanad hills. Seasons are Virippu, Mundakan and Puncha.
Where it is sold: Kerala has no paddy mandi culture at all. SUPPLYCO procures from the field through registered mills and issues you a Paddy Receipt Sheet - you then pledge the PRS to a bank for a loan, and the state is supposed to repay the bank. Kerala's base price beats the central MSP, which is the good news. The bad news is that the PRS system has been in crisis, with the Centre owing SUPPLYCO hundreds of crores, repayments delayed, and farmers in Kuttanad and Palakkad taking hits to their credit scores for a loan they did not really choose to take.
The local risk to plan for: Kuttanad's risk is water management, not rainfall. The polder must be dewatered by petti-para pumps before Puncha sowing, and an early monsoon or a single bund breach floods the whole padasekharam - the field block sinks together, and no individual farmer can bund their way out of it. Then the PRS delay means even a clean harvest is not cash for months. Labour is the biggest cost line in Kerala rice, and it is why paddy area keeps converting to coconut and homestead.
Best paddy (rice) varieties for Kerala
Grown in Kerala:
- Uma (Mo-16) - the Kerala workhorse
- Jyothi (PTB-39) - red rice, which is what the Kerala market actually eats
- Vytilla-6 / Vytilla-8 for saline Pokkali fields
- Jeerakasala / Gandhakasala (Wayanad GI aromatics)
- Ezhome-2 for Kaipad in Kannur
Confirm the variety is notified for Kerala — on laterite, coastal sandy, alluvium under largely rainfed (high rain) + wells, a variety bred for a different zone will underperform whatever the seed packet claims. Your Kerala KVK or agriculture officer holds the current shortlist.
Typical yield & price
Typical yield here is around 18–24 quintal/acre. The government MSP is ₹2,183/quintal; local mandi rates vary, so check YieldAI for today's live Kerala price.
Common problems in Kerala
The pests and diseases to scout for:
- brown planthopper - the Kuttanad classic, hopper burn inside the closed polder canopy
- iron toxicity and bronzing on Kuttanad's acid-sulphate soil - a soil problem, not an insect, and the one people misdiagnose
- rice bug at milk stage
- blast and sheath blight in the constant humidity
- rats on the polder bunds, which do real damage here
humid tropical conditions shape which of these bite hardest each season — scout early and act while a problem is small. YieldAI can identify a pest or disease from a photo of your crop.
Key practices
- In Kuttanad, lime the acid-sulphate soil and treat dewatering and bund upkeep as a padasekharam decision - the block floods or drains as one unit
- In Pokkali and Kaipad, do not fight the salt: run the traditional monsoon-rice then summer-shrimp rotation with Vytilla or Ezhome varieties - it is organic by default and carries a GI premium
- Sell into SUPPLYCO rather than a private buyer - the state base price is above the central MSP - but plan your cash flow assuming the PRS money is months away, because it has been
- Take the PRS to the bank promptly and keep the paperwork; the credit-score damage from a delayed settlement is real
- Wayanad aromatics and Pokkali rice earn a premium that ordinary Uma never will, but only with a buyer arranged in advance
