Why this matters

Two things decide a potato crop more than anything else: the quality of the seed tuber you plant, and how well you stay ahead of late blight. Get those right and the rest is routine.

Chapter 01

Season and seed

In the plains, potato is a rabi (winter) crop — planted roughly October–November and harvested in about 90–120 days. Cool weather makes the tubers; heat ends the crop.

Plant certified, disease-free, well-sprouted seed tubers (about 30–40 g, with short green sprouts). This is not the place to save money with ware potatoes from the market — most virus and disease problems ride in on poor seed. Handle sprouted seed gently so the sprouts do not break.

Chapter 02

Planting and earthing-up

Plant on ridges and furrows, roughly 60 cm between rows and 20 cm between plants. Then earth up (draw soil over the ridge) once or twice as the crop grows.

Earthing-up matters more than it looks: it gives the tubers room to bulk, stops them turning green (green potatoes carry bitter solanine and cannot be sold), and buries them away from tuber moth.

Chapter 03

Water and nutrition

Potato wants frequent, light irrigation and steady moisture — never let it swing between bone-dry and flooded, which cracks and mis-shapes tubers. The critical stages are tuber initiation and bulking; ease off as the crop matures.

It is a heavy feeder — apply N, P and especially potassium (K improves tuber quality and storage) as your soil-health card advises.

Chapter 04

Late blight — the make-or-break disease

Late blight can destroy a field in days in cool, cloudy, humid weather (dark water-soaked patches on leaves that spread fast). Manage it before it starts:

  • Grow a variety with some blight tolerance where you can.
  • Apply a protectant fungicide class ahead of blight weather — not after the field is hit. Watch the forecast; blight loves a cool damp spell.
  • Early blight (older leaves) and aphids also matter — aphids spread viruses, so rogue out sickly plants and, again, start with certified seed.

Chapter 05

Harvest and storage

About 10–15 days before digging, cut or remove the tops (dehaulming) so the tuber skins set and do not scuff. Harvest in dry weather, let the tubers cure briefly, and sort out cut or diseased ones.

Store cool and ventilated; for the table market, cold storage (around 2–4 °C) holds tubers for months. Potato has no MSP, so — like onion — storage and timing your sale is a big part of the profit. Check the live market prices first.
