How to Read Mandi Prices & MSP — and Decide Whether to Sell or Hold

Updated 2026-07-10 · Market & prices

Getting a good price is half of farming. But a "mandi rate" only helps if you know what it means, how it compares to the Minimum Support Price (MSP), and when it makes sense to sell versus hold. Here is a practical guide.

What the mandi price actually is

A mandi (market yard) price is the rate your crop fetched in a specific market on a specific day, and it moves with local arrivals, quality and demand. In India these are published daily by data.gov.in / Agmarknet; in the USA the equivalent government data is USDA, and in Canada it is Statistics Canada. Always compare the same commodity, variety and grade — a "cotton" price for one variety is not the price for another.

What MSP is (and is not)

The Minimum Support Price is a floor price the government announces for certain crops, at which its agencies will buy. It is a safety net, not a market forecast:

A simple sell-or-hold framework

There is no crystal ball, but a disciplined check beats guessing:

  1. Compare today’s price to MSP and to the last few weeks. Far above MSP and near a recent high? That is a strong case to sell.
  2. Cost your storage and risk. Holding has real costs — storage, quality loss, pests, and the chance the price falls. Only hold if the likely gain clearly beats those.
  3. Sell in parts. Selling a portion now and holding the rest (staggered selling) captures a fair average and reduces the pain of a wrong call.
  4. Watch supply. Prices usually fall at peak harvest when arrivals flood the mandi, and firm up later — but never bank on it for perishables.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mandi price and MSP?
The mandi price is the actual market rate your crop fetched on a given day; the MSP (Minimum Support Price) is a government-set floor price at which official agencies will buy certain crops. The mandi price can be above or below the MSP.
Should I sell my crop now or wait?
Compare today’s price to the MSP and to recent weeks, subtract your real storage and spoilage costs, and consider selling in parts. Sell if the price is clearly above MSP and near a recent high; hold only if the likely gain beats the cost and risk of storing.
Where do live crop prices come from?
From official government sources: data.gov.in/Agmarknet for India (mandi), USDA for the USA, and Statistics Canada for Canada. YieldAI Global pulls these live and shows them in your currency.
